About This Tool

Material Properties Calculator

The Density, Mass, and Volume Calculator helps you understand and calculate the relationship between these three fundamental material properties. Density is a characteristic property that can be used to identify materials and predict whether objects will float or sink.

Using the formula ρ = m/V, this tool allows you to calculate any of the three variables when you know the other two. It includes a reference table of common material densities and supports a wide range of units for practical applications in science, engineering, and everyday life.

Density units: kg/m³, g/cm³, g/mL, kg/L, lb/ft³
Mass units: kg, g, mg, lb, oz, tonne
Volume units: m³, cm³, L, mL, gal, ft³
Built-in reference table for common materials

Common Material Densities

Water 1,000 kg/m³
Iron 7,874 kg/m³
Aluminum 2,700 kg/m³
Gold 19,300 kg/m³
Air (STP) 1.225 kg/m³
Wood (Oak) 750 kg/m³

How It Works

Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance. It's a key property for material identification and buoyancy calculations.

Density = Mass ÷ Volume

ρ = m / V

Mass = Density × Volume

m = ρ × V

Volume = Mass ÷ Density

V = m / ρ

Use Cases

  • Identify unknown materials
  • Calculate buoyancy forces
  • Material selection in engineering
  • Chemical concentration calculations

Limitations

Density can vary with temperature and pressure. Values provided assume standard conditions (20°C, 1 atm).

  • Temperature affects density
  • Assumes homogeneous material
  • Gases compress under pressure
