About This Tool

Collision and Impact Analysis

The Momentum and Impulse Calculator helps you analyze collision dynamics and impact forces. Momentum (p = mv) is the product of mass and velocity, while impulse (J = F×t) represents the change in momentum caused by a force acting over time.

This tool is essential for understanding car crashes, sports impacts, rocket propulsion, and any situation involving collisions or sudden changes in motion. The conservation of momentum principle makes this calculator invaluable for physics students and engineers alike.

How It Works

Momentum is the product of mass and velocity. Impulse is the change in momentum, equal to force multiplied by time.

Momentum = Mass × Velocity

p = m × v

Impulse = Force × Time

J = F × Δt = Δp

Velocity = Momentum ÷ Mass

v = p / m

Use Cases

  • Analyze collision dynamics
  • Calculate ball impact forces
  • Rocket propulsion calculations
  • Safety equipment design

Limitations

This calculator uses classical mechanics. At very high speeds (near light speed), relativistic momentum must be used instead.

  • Does not account for relativistic effects
  • Assumes constant force during impulse
  • Uses scalar values (no direction)
